Do I charge sales tax for an online store for company located in CA?

The business entity is located in CA but there is not actual retail store. Revenue is generated through online sales. Do I charge sales tax only to people who purchase in CA or to who?

If your company or address is California, then normally you charge tax for those in California but not other states. Do you ship out from your home or is it drop ship? I don’t know if that makes a differene. But you collect the money and the tax as well.

pain in the neck, isn’t it? The states tried to get everyone to be forced to pay taxes, but last I heard they lost and it is only the state where the owner or business is.

Good luck.

  1. You MUST charge sales tax to EVERYONE who buys from your store. The Franchise State Tax Board LOVES to audit small businesses for sales tax payments. You have been warned!References : California CPA
